FREE Garmin Map update to latest MAPS version using the Mercedes Download Manager
This is only for Audio 20 / Garmin Navigation, not the Becker COMAND one.
Usually you can only update Garmin maps to the latest version for 60 days after you first activate the SD Card. You can update the Systems Software at any time using DLM (By yourself or get a dealer to do it), but the maps always stay on the original version after this 60 days meaning you have to buy a new SD card if you want to update to the later versions.
Currently, there is an anomaly that allows anyone to update their card legitimately to the latest version (as long as your Garmin SD card is a 32GB card and not an old 16 GB, as the new maps are just over 19GB) (Just put the card in a PC's SD reader to check the size).
My car came from the factory with Garmin 2016/2017 maps on the SD card but I now have the latest 2020/2021 V15.0 maps which were only released this month!
Steps:
1 - Download the Official Mercedes customer tool: Mercedes Download Manager (DLM) latest version 3.0.12 (older versions may not work and, incidentally, it is not Version 1.0.X which is a newer DLM program but only for cars with a different NTG system with widescreen display, so not for the R172). You do not need to Install the program. The username and password for this program are DLM and DLM (in capitals)
2 - BACKUP your current card using an SD card reader for your PC and with the DLM 3.0.12 backup tool.
I cannot stress how important this backup is. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!
3 - Ensure your SD card is not write protected, Move the tab toward the electrical contacts to unlock
4 - Update your Garmin SD card using DLM. If you have an old version of the Garmin software, you will be offered it automatically. (Current version 14.0). NB THIS ONLY UPDATES THE GARMIN SOFTWARE. It does NOT update the maps which stay on the same version as your card when it was new (or updated within the original 60 days if you did that)
5 - Now the anomaly that allows anyone to get the latest version of the Maps:Important step: In your Audio 20, and, with your Garmin SD card in the slot, select Vehicle, reset settings in the Audio 20 menus (Not the Navigation menu). This resets the Audio 20. (You will lose some settings like USB stick audio cataloguing and your Navigation and phone favourites but this is no big deal at all). Most importantly, the reset seems to mean that the Garmin Card update period of 60 days is also reset so you can update your maps!
6 - Wait for Audio 20 to restart, and just enter Garmin Navigation to confirm it works. NB. I may be worth leaving your car out in the open with ignition on for 5 minutes receiving it’s 3G signal to authenticate this reset - I did this and just waited for my live traffic update to occur meaning that the SIM card in my cars own communication device was communicating with Mercedes. It is possible that this is necessary as the allowable map updates are tied to your VIN and the SD card when you start DLM. DLM servers know the current version of your SD card even if you lose the SD or it fails, so you can use the tool to download and Restore a cloned SD (That only works on your cars with your VIN!) to a blank SD card if you have to.
7 - Put the Garmin SD card back in your PC and start DLM.
8 - You should immediately be notified that there is a new map update (and a new software update, possibly, if you skipped step 4). Install it. Mine took 3 hours to download (!) (It is 19GB) and 3 hours to write to the card (!).
9 - Sometimes, after installing, the new update doesn’t activate on first attempt. Click the Activate button a couple of times if it doesn’t. If it still doesn’t activate, restart DLM and you are notified there is a cancelled update, which will then reinstall / activate and the DLM software will close automatically. Use windows explorer to “Eject” the card rather than just pulling it out of it’s slot as you don’t want to risk corrupting the card if it is still being accessed!
10 - Put the SD card into your car. You will now have the latest maps! (Currently 2020/2021 V15.0 for Europe). In Navigation, scroll to settings, My Maps, to confirm this.
11 - If something goes wrong.. No problem! You made a backup in Step 2 right? This means you cannot make a mistake and can restore your old card anytime you wish, and simply start again. (Or go back to your old outdated maps, but why would you!)
